Professional Experience
Dr. Smith was born and raised in Honolulu. He graduated from Kamehameha Schools in 1981. and received his B.A. degree from Pomona College in California in 1985 before returning home to attend medical school at the University of Hawaii John A. Burns School of Medicine, graduating in 1990.
Following medical school, Dr. Smith completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the University of Hawaii. He then completed a year of subspecialty training in Orthopedic Sports Medicine at the world renowned Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic in Los Angeles, California. At Kerlan-Jobe, Dr. Smith served as assistant team physician to the Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Dodgers, California Angels, Los Angeles Kings, Anaheim Mighty Ducks, Los Angeles Galaxy as well as the University of Southern California Football Team.
He now serves as Orthopedic Team Physician for University of Hawaii Men’s Basketball and Kamehameha School’s Athletics. Dr. Smith is also an Assistant Clinical Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Hawaii, John A. Burns School of Medicine.
Dr. Smith treats a variety of orthopedic problems, but specializes in the treatment of athletic and non-athletic injuries of the shoulder, elbow, knee, and ankle using both traditional “open” and arthroscopic techniques.
