Robert E. Atkinson M.D.
Orthopedic & Hand Surgery, Joint Reconstruction
Born and raised in Philadelphia, Dr. Atkinson attended the University of Pennsylvania, where he was an All American in swimming. He went on to obtain his M.D. from Thomas Jefferson Medical College, and complete a one-year surgical internship at Yale University Medical Center. After finishing a four-year orthopedic residency at the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York, Dr. Atkinson did a fellowship in hand surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital.
Since then, Dr. Atkinson has built a reputation as one of the most knowledgeable orthopedic hand surgeons in the field. He has presented papers at meetings for the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, Eastern Orthopedic Association, and American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, as well as several hospitals and colleges. He has regularly been named to the Top Doctors list for Hawai’i, and was placed in the top 1% of hand surgeons by U.S. News and World Report.
Presently, Dr. Atkinson is Chief of the University of Hawai’i Orthopedic Residency Training Program. He has volunteered at the Shriners Hospital and has participated in Health Volunteers Overseas programs. Dr. Atkinson’s practice emphasizes treatment of hand and upper extremity conditions including nerve injuries, joint replacement, and arthroscopic surgery.
