Anthony M. Barcia M.D.

Orthopedic Surgery & Sports Medicine
Dr. Anthony Barcia was born and raised in Kailua, O’ahu. He graduated from ‘Iolani High School and attended Santa Clara University. Before going to medical school, he spent several years working in wildlife biology at Hawaii Volcanoes National Park and University of California at San Francisco Surgical Research Lab. An accomplished athlete, he coached rowing at the collegiate level for six years and was a NCAA head coach at a Division I program when he elected to return home to the University of Hawai’i John A. Burns School of Medicine. He received his medical degree and was president of his graduating class in 2009. Following medical school, Dr. Barcia completed his orthopedic surgery residency training at the Tripler Army Medical Center.
As an active duty officer and surgeon for the US Army, MAJ Barcia was stationed in South Korea for two years where he was a staff orthopedic surgeon at the 121st Combat Support Hospital in Seoul. Following this assignment, Dr. Barcia was stationed in Germany at the Landstuhl Regional Medical Center for three years, where he continued treating wounded war-fighters, warrior-athletes and their families. He has been deployed multiple times in support of combat operations and was decorated for performing lifesaving surgery while his unit was under fire in Syria in 2017. He was honorably discharged from the Army in 2019 after more than 10 years of active duty service.
Dr. Barcia then received sub-specialty fellowship training in sports medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Arizona, working closely with several world-renown orthopedic surgeons. He trained in minimally invasive arthroscopic surgery to treat disorders of the shoulder, hip, elbow, knee, and ankle while treating high school, collegiate, and professional athletes (NBA, NHL, NFL, MLB, and MLS). He has extensive experience with the use of orthobiologics and advanced operative and non-operative treatment strategies. Over the past two decades, he has authored an extensive list of peer-reviewed publications and has presented novel research at multiple national and international meetings.
In 2020, Dr. Barcia joined Orthopedic Associates of Hawaii. He specializes in sports medicine with advanced arthroscopy, trauma, joint preservation, total joint arthroplasty and the use of biologics. He is board certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgeons and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons.
Dr. Barcia and his wife live in Kailua and have four globe-trotting children who are happy to be back home in Hawaii again. He is an avid fisherman and gardener and enjoys running and hiking.
