Sports Medicine, Joint Reconstruction, and Arthroscopic Surgery
Dr. Harpstrite’s practice focuses on joint reconstruction, sports medicine, and fracture surgery. He specializes in arthroscopic and complex joint reconstruction procedures, as well as shoulder, hip, and knee replacement surgery. Dr. Harpstrite is one of the few surgeons in Hawai’i performing anterior approach total hip replacement, which allows precise implant placement without cutting into muscle.
Dr. Harpstrite was born and raised in Kaneohe. He attended the University of Colorado at Boulder before returning to Hawai’i for medical school. He completed a general surgery internship and a four-year residency at the University of Hawai’i, followed by a subspecialty fellowship at the University of Texas Southwestern and the University of Washington Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. He is an Army veteran and served as the Chief of Orthopedic Trauma and Assistant Chief of Sports Medicine and Joint Replacement at the Tripler Army Medical Center from 1996 to 2000.
He has been the team physician for PAC-5 football, as well as caring for triathletes, runners, surfers, and bikers throughout the state. Dr. Harpstrite is an Associate Clinical Professor of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Hawai’i. He has been widely published and regularly makes presentations.
He is married to Dr. Amy Harpstrite, a pediatrician in Kailua. They have three children. He is an avid surfer, windsurfer, triathlete and plays basketball and soccer. He also enjoys painting and ceramics.
